Imagine you’re sitting in your home on a cold winter day, you’re relaxing and reading a book and the next minute you’re freezing and your home isn’t the cozy place it should be.  It happens to homeowners all the time, one minute your home is the most comfortable place and the next it is too hot or too cold.  Now you’re left troubleshooting your HVAC system trying to find the problem.  Before you panic, here are some possibilities of what the problem could be.

The Electricity

In the summertime when you have the AC running throughout the day and you’re also using other appliance it can trip a breaker.  Your AC runs off your electricity and it typically has its own breaker.  Go down to your breaker box and find the breaker that powers the air conditioning and flip it to the right position.  If your AC comes on after you flip the breaker then the problem is solved.  You may want to speak to an electrician if the problem persists.  On the other hand if that doesn’t work then it is time to contact a specialist

The Thermostat

The thermostat is also a common cause of HVAC issues but the good news is that it is easily fixed.  Check and see if your thermostat is battery operated and if the battery needs to be changed.  There should be a light that flashes to indicate low power or if the battery is completely dead then the light will be completely out.

If you have an older thermostat that doesn’t have a digital display, rather you turn a knob or move a lever to adjust the temperature then it is time to change it out for something that works better and is more efficient.  Again if this doesn’t fix the problem then you will have to call an HVAC company to come and take a look.

The Ducts

Home maintenance is part of a homeowner’s responsibility and part of that is making sure that the ducts and filters are cleaned regularly.  If the filter is dirty it becomes clogged out and warm/cold air can’t get through.  The system has to work that much harder to get air through and when it comes to your air conditioner it can cause the coil to freeze over.

You need to clean the filter at least once a month and then replace it once a year.  Check with the manufacturer and see exactly what they recommend for maximum efficiency.  Also it should be noted that if a clogged filter causes other problems then it can possible void your warranty for not maintaining your system properly.

The Coolant

This applies to your air conditioner but often times when HVAC technicians get a call out to look at a malfunctioning air conditioner the problem is often low coolant.  You need sufficient amounts of coolant to keep the air blowing out at the right temperature.  If you have the air conditioner cranked and the air coming out isn’t that cold you may need to have a technician add coolant.

These are the most common problems that can happen to your HVAC system and how you can troubleshoot them.  If you’re not comfortable having a look at the system yourself then call in a specialist who can get the job done right.
